Earthquake Proof Buildings in Primary 5

6th Oct 2025

Primary 5 were looking at how certain buildings are built in order to withstand an earthquake. We discussed their properties and used them to create our own earthquake proof buildings, using spaghetti and marshmallows.

Finally, we put our buildings to the test. We used jelly, which acted as the earthquake, and shook the dish to mimic a range of magnitudes. The children collected data on how many were and were not earthquake proof. We discussed the reasons as to why some survived the test, and why some didn’t based on height, strength and width.

There were some excellent structures, well done Primary 5!
